Painting is a kind of evolution bringing life to where there was nothing; it is a process of enacting change, of exposure, and transformation. I paint intuitively either allowing unforced images to form on the canvas or beginning with a vague image in my mind or an emotion. I look to expose that which is contained; to externalize the internal and expose a coherent image in the marks on the canvas. Spontaneity is integral to this process of transcribing my thoughts from the brush to the canvas. The images formed become a metaphorical representation of my effort to understand myself in relation to the world.

Searching for the transformative moment that reveals the final image can be an extended process. Throughout I am manipulating the fluid paint, layering, responding to marks, colour, form, and space. In my latest series of work: Belly of Stones, Promulgate, Moment of Obsession, I strive to look at the darker side of human nature. Personal, social, and physical barriers, perspective altering change and moments of epiphany followed by a struggle for normalcy are primary themes in these works.
